- The Erdan Island Chain is more than just a Weyr; it is a corner of Pern, waiting to be explored. It's a sanctuary away from the troubles of the outside life, where you can safely develop a family among friends. People of all ages inhabit this site, from the young ones to the oldies.
- The Weyr's territory possesses quite a few minor holds scattered throughout the chain, so crafters are encouraged and there is certainly a lot for them to do. The Minercraft are most welcome, as the Erdan Islands are rich in firestone and coal, just waiting for the taking. Starcraft is quite respected here, the Erdan Island Chain being known for its magnificent sky. On clear nights, you can see the aurora australis from the southern islands.
- White Sands Weyr is located on the island of Essal in the Erdan Island Chain, off the eastern coast of the Southern Continent. Harper Hall is located on Huryen, one of the islands in the chain.
- Heated from the thermals that rise through the bottom of the crater the water is in, the Weyrlakes are warm Turn-round. Therefore, the Weyrlakes and indeed the ground off the Weyrbowl itself are always warm. This makes the Hatching Sands almost impossibly hot to walk on. The leatherworkers have been forced to come up with very special Candidate boots to allow those potentials to make it to the Clutch itself let alone stand there for the length of time a Hatching takes.
- Even being so surrounded by water, and the forest of the Continent protected by grubs, White Sands would often get amazingly devastating Falls. It is a fact known as quite a deathtrap. With their devastating Threadfalls, few ‘riders live to the age of seventeen without being scored, often seriously. It is not uncommon to lose a dragon every time Thread tumbles from the sky. Because the weather is so terrible and the Weyr itself is too small to support a very big population, the dragonriders have to compensate. That is one of the reasons Whers introduced into the islands, as well as to protect and help the miners. Dragonriders and Wher Handlers trained in the Island Chain are known as the best trained Thread fighters on all of Pern. Or they would be if they were fighting Thread anywhere else.
- Coal and firestone are a high-traffic commodity and in demand all around the world. With the discovery of so many veins, the islands became a popular source. Not known by the general populace, but the merchants and traders know them well.
- With the harshness of winter comes the snow and ice, and the majority of the southern part of the Island Chain is covered. Leaving no room for the Thread, this halves the Weyr’s territory, giving them many opportunities to indulge in the other thing they are known for - parties. If there is a reason, and sometimes if there is not, those that inhabit the Island Chain come up with a party.
- Starcrafters are highly respected here. The aurora australis are observable here during the winter months, which is surprising as the Weyr is not very close to the southern pole. It is the place to see the Dawn sisters clearly in the sky and is the clearest view on most of Pern. Along with the fantastic view of the sky and stars from the Weyr, the white sand from which the Weyr and Hold received their name is excellent for making glass. It is some of the purest sand in the southern hemisphere, broken down from the quartz crystals and other white hued minerals and rocks that lay embedded in the walls of the Weyr and island.
A contagious disease has spread throughout the Erdan Island Chain, trapping dragonriders and holdfolk alike far from home when Healer Lyxias declared a archipelago wide quarantine.
NEXT HATCHING: Late September / Early October
- We do our best to promote interaction and RP with more than just dragonriders... holders, Crafters, and other residents of the Island Chain.
- We accept all skill levels, but trend toward the literate/advanced.
- We also have a unique program. There is also a site where Crafters can go and train with people who have IRL knowledge of the Craft, ultimately ending in walking the tables. You can play the same character, visiting from one to the other just as though a denizen of Pern actually could!
- Oh, and we need all kinds of characters--feel free to apply as anything canon! (Some positions require admin permission)
