Paperwork.
Paper. Work.
Small pieces of hide or paper or whatever that required filling out. That were important to the running of the Hall. The entire Craft, even.
Paperwork.
However you put it, Kaede still hated it.
The elderly Mastercrafter growled under her breath as she put another piece of the accursed entity known as paperwork aside, only to find that while the pile had diminished, it hadn't diminished quite enough for her to be satisfied. She was sure her subordinates would find it hilarious if they ever found it out...the iron-fisted Master of their Craft snarling and attempting to avoid the work when she made a point of never ignoring work.
It wasn't that she avoided work...it was just that she didn't like staying still. Even at the jolly young age of seventy-six Turns, Kaede was a given if you wanted to send someone mad by keeping them cooped up without exercise for longer than an hour.
It was fair enough though. In her opinion, at least. She'd been an active person in her Craft for Faranth knew how many Turns, had travelled and worked in Weyr and Hold, had been a foster mother and a mother, and even before then, had known the hard working life of being Weyrbred and running around after four big brothers. Or running from them depending on the move.
She wanted to go for a walk. She wanted to run, even. Go for a ride. Even if it meant driving herself to further insanity in her attempts to wake Alaunus up enough for him to actually go faster than a walk. Sharded runner, anyone would think *he* was the seventy-six year old. Or a hundred, the way he behaved.
But then, she had her moments too. Where she felt one hundred. Or one thousand in age. It had been like that a lot, since she had lost Shigeru.
Hardy and quiet, but sweet, loving-humoured Shigeru. Even now, she still had her moments where she thought she saw a flash of hair that had been an even darker red than her own, brown eyes that glinted with the mischief of a child under that quiet, reserved appearance.
Stop it, you doddering old fool, Kaede snapped at herself, shaking her head and blinking hard before peering at her paperwork again. She was letting her mind wander, a grim thing to allow. She needed to concentrate...
Concentrate...
The sun filtered through, and it was so warm and inviting...
Concentrate!
A growl interrupted her monologue, and Kaede looked up and frowned at her firelizard. Shunsui had been napping happily on Kagirinai's head, and the black dog had been napping at her feet under the table. Though now, she had a disgruntled firelizard glowering at her, clearly displeased at her loud thoughts awakening him.
Kaede sighed, her frown fading into a rare half-smile as she bent and lifted the firelizard, setting him in her lap. Apologetically, she rubbed under his chin, watching with amusement when he lowered his self-imposed neutrality to purr at the ministrations.
"Shunsui..." she sighed, knowing it was probably fruitless, "Please tell me there's some kind of distraction awaiting me, somewhere?"
A chirp was her response, but of course, no assistance was forthcoming. Figures.
I'm getting too old for this..." Kaede grumbled, dark blue eyes both annoyed and amused as Shunsui responded by balancing on his hindquarters, front paws resting on her chest as he stretched upwards, intent on gaining the fullest benefit of her attentions.
