Name: Rydel
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Journeyman Level 1
Age: 17
Fire-lizard: Brown Fire-lizard Risen
Appearance:
Thick hair hangs down on either side of his sun-darkened face. It is obvious he has spent the majority of his life somewhere sunny. His green eyes are hollowed underneath as though he doesn't sleep much. He inherited his mother's thin, almost too thin build and is only 5'7". The rest of his height was given to him by his father. Thin to the point of worrying some, probably both because of genetics and that he doesn't eat very much. In fact, Rydel looks very much like a younger version of his father with R'den's darker brown slightly curly hair and long fingered hands; however he has Beryl's inquisitive green eyes.
Despite the fact he is at the age where most boys are in the middle of adolescence, there are only vague signs he is maturing. His voice cracked a few times, and he has grown an inch over the past three Turns. However, he has not filled out at all even though the lessons of both Weyr and Hall have left him in good shape.
Personality:
Quiet and reserved, he does not initiate conversations and rarely answers with more than but a few words unless the conversation is about StarCrafting. He knows his stars and 'heavenly bodies' very well, but knows more about the ones in the Southern Hemisphere than the Northern Hemisphere. Were it not for some classes being inside, he would spend all of his time outside and as high up as possible. He keeps meticulous notes and has excellent handwriting.
When he was younger he tended to walk around with his head in the clouds, almost literally for he spends a great deal of his time walking around the Weyr looking at the sky. This made it rather awkward to talk to him if one expects to have a conversation with him looking at them. It also made him relatively oblivious to the other people around him simply because he was not looking at them.
His studies at Starsmith Hall have changed him, leaving him with a more serious bend of mind. The Masters there did not take kindly to dreamy students, especially those with so much potential to walk the tables early due to their incredible knowledge of everything related to the stars and sky. Under their tutelage his daydreaming has almost completely ceased, leaving him a rather sober individual. However, his Craft is not a people-oriented Craft, so he continues to remain people-awkward.
As devoted to his Craft as his mother is, he differs in the sense that he manages to find time for people, even vague time. If he realizes they are present, he will interact with them with all the social awkwardness of both a teenager and someone who simply has not had a lot of practice.
Despite his seeming absence to the small detail of people, when Rydel is set to a task he is a tireless worker and avid learner. In an effort to better himself (and make himself look good in his mother's eyes in hopes of notice) he studies anything and everything he can find. When not doing studying his Craft or in lessons he can be found in the library or in his favorite place in the whole world, the ruins of the Observatory. The closer to the stars he is, the better.
Although he is better at paying attention to someone talking for long periods of time, now he simply gets bored rather than having the inability to focus. Give him a good lecture about the stars, the sky, the position of the Red Star or even the latest reports on when Threadfall is coming and he's fine. Other things are a bit more difficult.
When he was younger, Rydel thought of the prospect of being a dragonrider in terms of the great adventures they will have flying high into the sky, soaring above the clouds and watching the sunset over the ocean with nothing to interfere but the wind. Now he had come to terms with not Impressing, he finds that Risen is all the company he needs to have great adventures.
As the clutches pass and he is left as a Candidate, strange bitterness and anger are growing within him. Saleemath's Rise brings only a vague hope to him; however the longer he remains unImpressed the more he is considering merely transferring to Starsmith Hall and staying there.
The destruction of his beloved Observatory has brought out a new trait within the Candidate. When there is something he truly believes in, he is incredibly pro-active about it, taking nearly obsessive measures to ensure it is completed.
Despite the fact upon his return to the Weyr he the de facto Starsmith of the Weyr as he was in charge of the Starsmith Hall (while still an apprentice), he was never (in his esteem) treated with any amount of respect whereas Caitir who is barely older than he is was not only treated with respect but also given the title of Weyr's Healer. Between this apparent dismissal of the position he was forced to assume and the fact people only noticed he was at the Weyr a few days before he intended to leave, Rydel's mounting bitterness at the world in general has continued to grow...
History:
He was born and raised in White Sands Weyr, and is the son of StarCrafter for Southern Weyr, Master Beryl, rider of green Ilenmyth. He started his apprenticeship into the Starsmith Craft at the age of eight, and became one of a long line of Starcrafters. The journeywoman he was studying under treated him just like an other starsmith apprentice, giving him no special privileges or free advice simply because she was his mother. While many holdborn he meets wonder why he does not resent his mother for this, generally the weyrbred understand. The only exception to this was the day she took him aside to explain he was descended from a long line of starcrafters. Whether it was the knowledge of this lineage, the fact she was his mother or simply because he wanted to be the best, he did everything he could to show Beryl, he was the best.
As is customary with all weyr-bred males, he stood as soon as he turned 12. The Hatching when he was 12 is the first one he can remember the best. Even though he wasn't actually Searched, he lingered at the edge of the Sands... just in case. Indeed, most of the Weyr remembers it... for it was a tragic one indeed. Not only was a boy mauled, but one of the young dragons, a brown went /between/. Though the memory stayed with him, Rydel was not scarred by it as some of the others at that Hatching were. He tends to tell anyone who wouldn't know he is Weyr borne that he was actually Searched then.
During the Hatching of Jieraynth's last clutch, when he had just turned 13, Rydel watched as all the other eggs were taken. Almost everyone else at the Clutch Impressed, except for him and Behlina… and she was injured during the Hatching. Left alone on the Sands, the only thing he could think about was that … hopefully… his dragon just hadn’t hatched yet... Beryl encouraged him with this thought, and continued to train him as though he were merely her apprentice.
Along with many of the other members of the Weyr, he caught firehead and slowly recovered. There does not seem to be any lingering side effects from his illness, except perhaps he doesn't look up as often as he used to.
Melorath's maiden Clutch proved just as fruitless for Rydel, and he was left Standing for a fourth time... since he had been passed over in four Hatchings now, and at the end of his last decided to go to the hall of the Starsmiths to further his education.
His mother transferred shortly after that from White Sands to Southern, where she still is as far as he knows. Although he has been working hard, he had yet to walk the tables to Journeyman. At last report, the Master Starcrafter suggested one more Turn of studying before he did.
Upon hearing word there was another Clutch on the Sands, Rydel requested a transfer back to the Weyr so he could be allowed to Stand. They recently granted his request and he returned to the Weyr, in time to help with the damage from the Storm. Again he was passed up at the Clutch, leaving him even more frustrated.
Now a few months back home he has weathered the Storm. Interestingly enough, B'rioth's injury has left Rydel as the 'ranking' Starsmith in the Weyr. The devastating blow of seeing his beloved Observatory cast into ruins from the Storm spurred Rydel into action. He has been attempting to convince not only N'olan and Niamh to assist in repairing but also petitioned several of the Crafters throughout the Island Chain.
He fought in yet another Threadfall. Just after Threadfall word reached him that Starsmith Hall is waiting for him to return so he can walk the tables early to Journeyman. He accepted their request. However, when it came time to return to the Weyr for the Hatching, he elected to stay at the Hall and refused to go with the rider who was dispatched to collect him. As no one seemed greatly bothered by his absence (the Weyrwoman's reaction was to 'be sadden by his decision') he simply assumed he was right and no one cared.

Although he has about a Turn left to still be eligible as a Candidate, unless someone comes specifically to the Hall to retrieve him, Rydel has no interest in returning any time soon.
However after the master he was studying under - Therost - discovered he was a Candidate and missing a Hatching, he had gotten Darton involved. The MasterStarsmith of Pern officially assigned him to White Sands Weyr, and he came back at the tail end of the New Hope Hatching. He came back with mixed emotions.
